Fine Art Products | Albums, Standouts and Gallery Wraps

Since the the time of Jesus being at the wedding in Cana, everyone understands the importance of displaying your best product in the most prominent spot. Just as the pictures of your kids in your billfold have them smiling rather than crying, there is an innate understanding of displaying the best face, because that's the way you remember it. All this to say that Selah carries the line of art products that you want in order to display your photos in the way that is not only intriguing to others, but enables them to experience the event the same way you remember it - bound in leather. One of my favorite couples, Andy and Angela just sent over this image of their 20x30 standout. I like this photo so much I wish I was in it rather than the one who had taken it. I'm sure this standout will be an art piece in their family for many years. [/flo_one_third] [flo_two_third_last padding="20px 20px 20px 20px" class="" ]artistic photograph in couple's home

Botanical Gardens Wedding

Botanical Gardens Wedding

Though planning a wedding usually keeps a couple up nights thinking through the color of napkins and the sharpness of forks, there are certain touches to the evening that can only be provided by God, like a combination of the perfect cool September evening and a high rattlesnake danger. These, as well as the best reception playlist we’ve ever heard, were two of the elements that not only made Tim and Heather’s wedding uniquely beautiful, but also kept Selah Auxiliary Shooter (Matt, my handsome husband) afraid while kneeling in bushes trying to get some rustic, weedy photos of the bride and groom (see below.)

The officiant was a well-spoken and sagacious judge with wisdom to share. The musician/best man, Carlos, was a Peruvian guitarist with fingers to woo a bee from a flower. The father of the bride pulled his nicest shoes out of the attic only to find they hadn’t held up as well as he hoped. Tim’s Hawaiian mother and aunts performed their traditional dance to the Lee staple, “Tiny Bubbles”. It was a storybook of a night. However, the most iconic event of the night was still the love displayed between all the family, and most of all Heather and Tim. We were happy to be a part of their wonderful night.

Thank you to Chatfield Botanical Gardens along with CC and her lovely crew from Colorado Wedding Company for setting up the environment that allowed for us to document this wedding so well.

natural wedding photographer | destination wedding | kyle . alicia

Destination Montana Wedding | FOR-EVER | Alicia . Kyle "FOR-EVER," Alicia tells her future husband at any mildly applicable opportunity. In her sarcastic seriousness, she reminds Kyle of what he is getting himself into. Upon initially meeting with these two, I was able to tell right away that their wedding would be lots of fun. The perfect balance with a fun wedding is finding a couple who really believes in the importance of photography. Just as there were no details that went untouched, there we no feelings or points of significance that went undocumented during this wedding celebration.

Northern Montana welcomed all of Alicia and Kyle's closest friends and family to the coolest camp we've ever been at on the edge of a lake cradled by mountains. Their celebration lasted days and everyone stayed on site.

Who knew Montana was so beautiful? I imagine this post will create a spike in the Montana destination wedding market.

We came away from this wedding with great additions to our portfolio and a new set of friends. Thank you everyone for creating such a wonderful environment to explore and photograph.

Broadmoor Wedding Photographer | Dom . Mary

[flo_image_text image_url="http://selah.dev/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/broadmoor_wedding_photographer048.jpg" img_position="left" img_width="50" ]

Broadmoor Wedding Photographer

For neighboring patrons of the Broadmoor, it may have appeared to be a screen testing for the future James Bond movie when the groomsmen arrived at the scene. With that many handsome men in tuxedos and British accents, one would assume that no one outside of Hollywood could put such a group to assembly. And, one would be right, because it took two, in the wedding of Dom and Mary, not only to put together such a dapper group of men but also to juxtapose each of them with an equally radiant female counterpart (though a Texan accent more than British for the gals).

The whole wedding party and wedding itself was the kind of event that inspires artists to fill frames and Webster to redefine the word "classy." The intimate service took place in a small and antiquated church while the reception was in a room of the nearby Broadmoor hotel, who did not hold back on decor and mirrors.

Taking unique wedding pictures of fun and good-looking people like Dom and Mary makes the job feel too pleasurable to call work. Taking pictures at the exquisite Broadmoor hotel can make a photographer feel too overwhelmed on picking which of the perfect locations is the most perfect. However, with a combination of each, Selah had a momentous evening filling some frames of their own in the company of people who are as beautiful on the inside as the out. Furthermore, if you aren't sold yet, may I also mention that the deer were so close you could almost pet them.

Wedding photojournalist in Denver | Craig . Kelly Last weekend, the shortly yet longly awaited wedding of Craig and Kelly took place at Evergreen Lakehouse. This beautiful Colorado mountain wedding venue sits aside Evergreen Lake. We were delighted to be a part of this wedding for many reasons but mostly because we think Craig and Kelly are so great.

I hope that while you look through these journalistic wedding images you will be able to tell how tightly the two were holding each other. I hope you can see how joyful and in love they are, and lastly, I hope that you come away wanting more of the true and confident love that we saw in Craig and Kelly. Evergreen lake house wedding

Creative Wedding Photography | Austin . Jenny During one of Nebraska's more tolerable summer days, Austin and Jenny exchanged vows in front of 150 of their closest friends and family. The simple and intimate wedding lent well towards focusing the attention on the pure joy displayed throughout the faces of the bride, groom and their guests.

Stay tuned for an update on this posting. Until then, let us share just a few of our favorites.

creative wedding photographer in denver | can't resist the repost

Creative wedding photographer in Denver | Galen . Roya I couldn't resist posting an update on this couple's wedding. The two were a perfect fit for a creative and unique portraiture...my favorite flavor.

Though the wedding story telling and imagery is compelling I think the main reason I wanted to re-post these photographs is because of the ring bearer. He may just be one of the cutest and funniest I've seen.

Here's to the ring bearer and his green bow tie.

Unique Wedding Photographs | Downtown Denver | Galen . Roya I'm featuring just a few of Galen and Roya's unique wedding portraits. It was a priority for the two to have their wedding documented in a unique and artistic perspective. These fine art images are the type of photos that only gain interest over time.

The two exchanged vows near downtown Denver at City Park. Thank you Galen and Roya for allowing me to be a part of your special day.

These are exactly the kind of portraits I hang on my studio wall to show my favorite type of images. I like these so much I'm thinking about superimposing my face in to the photos. Too much? I think you get the point.

it's like rain on your wedding day | christian . michelle

Montana Outdoor Camp-like Wedding | Christian . Michelle The ubiquitous and inevitable ingredients of any American wedding include cake, white dress, flowers, and a relative or two who is known as "Crazy Uncle John" and it is understood that he is to be taken with a grain of salt. In the case of this rural Montana ranch wedding of Christian and Michelle however, the Crazy Uncle Johns were outnumbering the urbanites and the grains of salt were copious. Without ever bringing it to a vote, it was unanimous that for every member involved, Christian and Michelle's wedding ranked among the best weddings and best events even, of all time.

The festivities started with an all-inclusive frisbee golf event (google Christian Dietrich disc golf), then on to a rehearsal party in the home of several thousand books (google Christian Dietrech's dad's book collection), followed by a day of preparation, a solitary Quakeresque wedding, the reception, then an enormous bonfire of Norwegian candles and all guests hunkering down for the night in their tent near the river. In all of it, the Crazy Uncle John Montana spirit kept all spirits high and flames burning.

The most notable example of this was when during the reception, a sudden storm came in quickly and strongly with wind and rain. Michelle, the bride, threw on a coat over top of her dress and started directing traffic. About four other men took off their shirts and buckled in their beards before taking on the storm to save the tent, the band, and anything else that needed saving. Not long after, in the safety of a wall-less tent, we all watched the bride and groom do their first dance in jeans and raincoats with soaked hair and loving smiles to acoustic music.

Towards the end of the night, there was no telling the Montana locals from the Entourage-extra looking East Coasters because all were arm in arm and beer in hand, laughing like we knew it was our last chance to dance in the eye of the hurricane. (For the record, there was no pt. II to the storm. The next morning we all had breakfast together in the sunshine).

The Dietrich-Johnson wedding is the kind of event that not only makes the job of photography beautiful, but also the job of "earth dweller". We liked it. montana_wedding001

Snowmass Destination Wedding Photographer

[flo_one_third padding="20px 20px 20px 20px" class="" ]

Snowmass Destination Wedding Photographer

As a junior photographer watching the Oscars, one often fantasizes about taking pictures of the celebrities as they tread the red carpet. What is even better than that though, is getting the chance to take pictures of people who look like celebrities getting off a chairlift in Snowmass Colorado (near Aspen), which is exactly what we were able to do here at Selah for Danielle and Pete's wedding.

Set near the top of the mountain, there were some amazing natural backdrops, as well as an elevation high enough for the fake John Lennon to make a real complaint during the reception as his Beatles Tribute band kept everybody shaking in between cake breaks.

Danielle was a gorgeous bride who put more time into planning her wedding than most. She knew what she wanted down to the details and was thrilled to have it take place in a town where she has so much family history. Pete's skillset was really put on display whenever he held the microphone or went out of his way to show gratitude to friends and workers. Pete and Danielle, a highly complementary couple, started dating in the sixth grade. They were good at posing for photos then (see below) and have only gotten better since.

This is the kind of wedding where everything is aesthetic and the challenge for the photographer is to zero in on the unique characteristics that tell the story. That's why we enjoyed it so much. (That, and the cake). I also want to acknowledge wedding cinematographer Kyle Hodge and the ladies with Jane Floyd & Associates, the Aspen Wedding Coordinators, for being so helpful and enjoyable to work with. As a Snowmass Destination Wedding Photographer, this one was all we could hope for.

DIY Park Wedding | Kyle . Lis

[flo_one_third padding="20px 20px 20px 20px" class="" ] Love filled DIY Park Wedding | Kyle . Lis

One would assume that love is the reason, focus, and theme of any wedding, but for me it wasn't until Kyle and Lisa's wedding that love was the part that stood out most (as opposed to the usual stress); more than the horse shoes, decorations, or music. Admittedly, I knew more of the back story and members involved in this wedding than I normally do but in my totally biased opinion it was the family's love and coming together like a Swiss Family Robinson wedding put on by non-Pixar Disney that really brought this beautiful, outdoor Omaha wedding to life.

With Kyle, the groom, so close to his own parents and sister, and Lisa, the smilingest bride since April of 03', so close to not only her parents but her 9 siblings as well, there were few moments captured on film that didn't include the sincere emotion of a biological loving supporter. Brothers-in-law joking, nieces and nephews spreading bubbles and crying, and the sisters also crying, the love was everywhere and Selah was happy to keep up even in the hovering lake of midwestern humidity.

Whenever there was setting up, cleaning up, or tearing it up (that is, dancing), to be done, the Winter and Gebauer family members were all over it and happy to help. Even in the family photos (with possible exception of the youngest Gebauer, Claire, who filled her smiling quota half way through) the clan was all happy to be together and no one complained about how long it took, how hot it was, or how close together they had to stand in order to get the entire family in one frame.

It truly was well put together and a joyous spectacle for the rest of us who got to join the family for the day. I hope that Selah will be hired to shoot the weddings of the other siblings as well. We've only got seven more opportunities so my trigger fingers are crossed.

Devil's Thumb Ranch Wedding | Mountain Wedding Photographer

Devil's Thumb Ranch Wedding . Journalistic Wedding Photographer

With tattoo sleeves, kids in bow ties, and horses in the distance; Reuben and Ali's wedding at the Devil's Thumb Ranch (near Winter Park) has definitely been a photographical highlight this year in Selah's resume. Reuben and Ali are two beautiful people who not only have good taste but keep eclectic and international company. There were as many accents and body accessories as there were dance moves and it all came together for Selah to paint some beautiful pictures. Not to mention the backdrop of Devil's Thumb Ranch. It's a Colorado venue like no other.

Some of the highlights: - Handmade decorations by Ally including mason jars with a picture and a candle inside. - The Gregory family "marathon" skit involving a clever poem, some flashy 80's athletic gear, and some Rocky soundtrack introductory music. - Some of the best photobooth expressions we have ever seen. - Reuben tearing up during his vows and the nearby horses all gathering right behind him when he does it. - The Bride and Groom's first dance, which was a montage of surprise, and as Reuben admitted after, "The part that I was most nervous about."

What a great day spent with some great people. This is what makes our job so great.

marriage celebrated after the wedding

Celebrating Family and Love I had the pleasure of celebrating two anniversaries with this loving and sentimental family. We often spend so much time in celebrating and supporting the initial union of marriage...but really shouldn't couples be supported when they have journeyed together for years?

This intimate and beautiful celebration was designed with sentiment. The children presented their parents with special keepsakes and memories of good things, places and experiences.

I am so thankful to have been a part of this meaningful and moving experience. This family has really encouraged me to celebrate people and relationships more.

Country Wedding | Eric . Tona I really wasn't sure what to expect when Tona told me that she and her dad were planning on clearing out their quonset to turn it in to Eric and Tona's chic, country wedding. Upon stepping into their reception we were amazed at, really, how perfect it was. Every moment and detail was knit together perfectly as the two celebrated and shared their story with hundreds of their closest friends and family.

It was so fun to be back at my home town to document this wedding. I just love Tona and don't know that I've seen a more beautiful bride. Enjoy this story.

Colorado wedding photojournalist | M.J

Colorado wedding photojournalist If this blog post doesn't make you sappy I'm not sure what will. The rawness of this bride and groom's personality and connection is flooding every image.

I am so honored to have been a part of their story and to have documented the trueness of who they are. As a journalistic wedding photographer, I'm not as interested in photographing what a person looks like. I find a documentation successful when the images tell truly who a couple is. Thanks to this lovely couple and their openness I am proud to present the story of Margaret and Jonas's wedding celebration through a set of strong photojournalistic and fine art wedding imagery.

Their intimate wedding took place at the Evergreen Lake House in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It was dowsed with organic, delicate, natural and vintage details.

Also, a big thank you goes out to Nathan and his wonderful second eye.

Castle wedding in Colorado

for Jeremy and Zofia - their unique Colorado wedding

When one of my favorite Denver wedding planners, Cielle, laid out her recommended photographers' business cards to Zofia, she immediately grabbed my card and said "I want this one." It took me all of a minute in meeting with Zofia to be certain that we would be a great fit too.

This kind, gracious, creative and unique couple celebrated their wedding at a unique Colorado venue, Cherokee Castle and a private residence. Their small and intimate Colorado wedding was infused with their heritage, personality and vision. We were so happy to be a part of this day. So happy!

I found myself clapping behind my computer several times upon grabbing the images for this preview. Zofia and Jeremy, we love you.

wedding happiness . katie and michael

Katie | Michael Happiness looks like this.

The beautiful Katie and Michael's Nebraska wedding was nothing short of a party and we've got journalistic image after image to prove it. Every detail of this day was tended to with care and personality as their 400+ guests came to celebrate this day full of meaning and significance. We captured some great stories to help these two remember this day forever. photo taken in a field

How to have an authentic wedding

How to have an authentic wedding

Plan your wedding day so that it really is the best day of your life

[flo_one_half padding="20px 20px 20px 20px" class="" ]fashion-like engagement picture

unique engagement image

After attending hundreds (millions) of weddings in the past, planning my own has been an eye opening experience. What to wear? How to wear it? Who to invite? How much money to spend?...the questions go on and on and on. Here is some of the most important advice I can impart to you while planning your wedding.

Team work. This is likely the first big event you and your love completely do together. Start it out right, and do it together. "Whatever she wants" isn't a phrase that I hear Matt say. It's our wedding and WE want to be infused in every part of it…not just me. There are some things I don't care about and there are some things he doesn't care about…but for the most part, make your decisions together.

This is just the beginning. Use your engagement time as more than a time to focus on material things and party planning. Spend some time reading books together, listen to sermons and invest in your pre-marital counseling. Matt and I are meeting with a couple who's marriage we respect along with a pastor. We've read through several books and are learning about how to love and respect each other. This time of waiting and planning is perfect for learning how to communicate and love each other well. Our reading list included:

-The Most Important Year in A Man's Life and The Most Important Year in A Woman's Life by Robert Wolgemuth, Mark DeVries, Bobbie Wolgemuth, and Susan DeVries -The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller -A Lasting Promise by Scott M. Stanley

Use your resources… but don't USE your resources. You're best high school friend is a DJ, he would do it for free, right? Free usually comes with a price tag…unfortunately especially when it's someones job, free or half price usually ends up in a bit of bitterness and feelings of disrespect. Don't short change your vendors and helpers. Leave tips and be careful who you ask to do things for free.

Think outside of the box. You would be amazed at what you can find at thrift stores. We have picked up incredible decor for our cake table and centerpieces…decor that we spend pennies on and can send it back to a thrift store after it's used.

Our ceremony will be held in the mountains and our focus for the decor is highlighting God's creation. When seeking out the space earlier this year we collected bags full of pine cones. Pine cones are wintery, no? The correct answer is indeed no. Make them what you want them to be. We will be sporting pine cone centerpieces and pinecone bouquets. A pine cone hat, you may be thinking… "don't be surprised" would be my response.

Does this really matter? When the days are narrowing down and any new project brings up more stress ask yourself if it really matters…will anyone really notice if we didn't get a picture in the slideshow of us during the first month of dating? Is it really going to make a difference if we have matching bedazzled slippers to leave the reception in?

couple walking in the distance

The numbers are horrifying? We aren't number fans but for some reason we were keeping a running tally of where every cent was allotted. As the planning got more detailed, so our budget rose and actually doubled what our dream budget would be. If it's not essential for you to be exactly on budget, and budget isn't fun for you…put together a system that is for you. We have a check list of what we need to pay for and are working out way to the bottom from there.

Quick tips for wedding bliss.

-It's okay to not get your way. -I am not a Bridezilla! If you say that, you are. -Instead of asking for deals, ask if you can get less of the vendors services instead. -Seek out vendor reviews. -Hold your visual expectations loosely. -Don't forget about your relationship. -Ask your parents what three things are important to them. -Try to seek out your vendor as a person rather than only talking about numbers and services. You spend a lot of time with these people, make sure you love them.

Wedding Planners? Yes please. Even if your dream full service wedding planner is unavailable or unattainable, find a day of coordinator or someone close. Don't make your favorite aunt stay late and wake up early to make sure everything is going smoothly. An important goal of Matt and I's is that we aren't doing any work during the wedding day. This is almost impossible if you don't have someone putting everything together for you. Remember, this day is for you and it's such a big deal. Be sure that your planning is set up in a way that allows you to enjoy everything that you can.

As a wedding photographer, I've been to a million weddings and learned a lot of things at each one. Now as I prepare to be married myself, I would like to share with you my tips on how to make your wedding day the best day of your life.

We are less than two months away from our big day and I am way behind on sharing the things I have learned and experienced. We've been engaged for a long and short four months and as each day gets closer we become more and more excited for the wedding and even more excited for life together as best friends.

picture of matt zoeller and jackie nuxoll

Your grandma will just die…"Your grandma will just die if you wear that on your head," my mom told me. I responded with, "We'll, it's going to be really sad to see grandma die on my wedding day." I love my grandma, don't get me wrong, but expect that everyone may hate something that you do. Good thing it's not their wedding.

If it's not fun, don't do it. If the garter toss is not fun for you, don't do it. If you think veils look like halloween costumes, don't wear it. Folding five hundred candy boxes…fun? Yes, don't do it. But, but don't we have to have the cake cutting? Say it with me now… "I don't have to do it."

If it's not fun or meaningful to you, don't do it. Do your single friends really want to be pointed out and brought to the dance floor to get lucky, catch a bouquet and "be next>" I have been to weddings where I am not sure if anyone is having fun. Will you regret it? When figuring out where to spend your budget, ask yourself, will I regret this…will I look back in 500 years and kick myself for not spending the extra million on that garter. Which leads in to my next point…

Focus on the important things/Is it fun? When deciding who was going to photograph my wedding (which started prior to even meeting Matt) I tossed and turned through my options. My all time favorite photographers would cost almost our entire budget. I thought I could hodge podge all of my photographer friends "Joe could do the couple photos," "Moe could do the reception," "Boe could do the wedding party," and then I asked myself, "Would that be fun?" It was pretty clear that no one would think that would be fun, including myself. Then I decided that I would rather not have photos than have images that I didn't like… OR, I could set up a timer or have my bridesmaids take photos…Matt and I could even take pictures of each other! We'll save tons!!

da. da. da. da. da. Shortly after, God blessed me with the most wonderful photographer. We will be spending oh…30ish percent of our budget on him. Why? Because we would regret it if we didn't. We don't care about the cake, we don't care about my shoes…but the photography, that is important to us.

Guest list. Oh…we can invite them…I'm sure they won't come. No no no. They will come. Invite only those who you really want to be there.

It's okay if everyone is not involved. This one was a difficult sacrifice for me. I wanted 6 flowergirls and 12 personal attendants because I love them all, but also because I wanted to not make people feel left out. We've found that simplicity makes us happy and that trying to please everyone is an endless and fruitless pursuit. Do what you want to do, but there really is no need for 12 personal attendants.

Make a list, check it twice. Make a monthly check list. One for the essentials and one for the non-essentials. If you do not complete the non-essentials, you are still allowed to cross it off the list (which is always fun) but leave it out. Wedding planning is a second full time job that you actually have to pay to do. Yet , you have no obligation to complete many of the problems. In some situations, stress can be your choice. Make your lists, check them twice. You don't always have to be stressed.

Hire someone you trust and make yourself trust them. From a vendors perspective, there is nothing more damaging than feeling not trusted. Signing that contract is more than saying I will pay you, it's saying I believe in you and trust you. I absolutely do my best work when a client believes in me which thankfully is the case more than not. Even if you don't fully trust your vendor and it's to late to change, pretend. You're likely to get poor results when your vendors aren't feeling loved. It's the circle of life.

Your vision and expectations. How to get the best out of your vendors...In trusting your vendors you essentially are trusting in their gifts and work flow. If they tell you pine needles will not go well in the soup but you just love pine soup…trust their expertise.

Your vendors live and breathe the business. My dress is currently being made and my pintrest board titled "dresses" doesn't have a dress in the mix that looks anything like my dress being made. There is no model or bride I tagged that is me. In showing my seamstress who I am and trusting her, I have a dress that I could have never expected or envisioned. It's perfectly me. Again, from a vendors perspective, no two people can see things the same way. Hire someone for what they see and check the reality and clarity of your expectations.

picture of couple in the city and mountains

Personality. "Maybe we shouldn't do this epic save the date because no one will get it," was a thought that passed through our minds for a brief second. Though we had to explain it to most people, everyone loved it because it was us. The more you are you, the more meaningful and enjoyable the celebration to everyone.

Michael | Jamie

Creative Denver Wedding Photographer

It didn't take me long to fall in love with this vibrant couple. It's not common for me to pursue clients...actually I'm not sure I ever have, Jamie and Michael being the exception. Their peaceful, artistic and joyful nature were just a few of the things that made me chase after them upon our first meeting over a year ago. "I know I will photograph you well," I assured them after getting a glimpse of what an awesome pair they are.

Polka? Yes, Polka. The traditional German reception involved dancing around in circles the whole night with intermittent stops for the pinning of a twenty dollar bill and a "sip" of tequila .

If my writing skills could describe this wedding as accurately as the imagery, I would contemplate making lists of all the things we loved. Instead, I'll fill you in as the story goes along and give you a short preview of everything that made this event magical.
