Urban Wedding | Colorado Athletic Club

For James and Jennaweh

artistic urban wedding image

It happened just like it does in the movies.

She’s in a place in life where she’s ready to meet someone. She’s accomplished with notable honors, he’s a gifted culinary artist - They’re in their own worlds, out spending a Saturday night with friends and walking amongst many eyes, he sees hers. He stops her, tells her how beautiful she is and the “I think I’m going to marry him” conversations start happening with the best friend that next day. Then the credits roll, we take a deep breath and remember that love never really happens that way.

Well, almost never. The busy street corner was 20th and Market. The stars of the movie were Jennaweh and James. One evening walking in downtown Denver, one of the most kind and joy-filled couples I’ve had the pleasure of photographing were randomly lead together and on a lovely evening the following September we met in the same urban setting to celebrate their union.

The wedding took place at one of the most beautiful and ornate Greek churches in Denver. The ceremony was rich with tradition and symbolism. The reception lead us downtown Denver near the location where the two met at the urban wedding venue, The Denver Athletic Club. Cultural dancing, fine eating, joy and gratitude were just a few of the things that highlighted the evening.

It’s the stories that draw us in to one another. Weddings are wrapped around stories of who you were, stories of wise people who wrote of love, our creator who dictates our story and hope and prayers for where the story will go. I think this small selection of James and Jennaweh’s documentary style wedding photography will encapsulate the pieces of life up until today. We’ve got the story of the city, the emotion, affection and feeling. The trailer to their next movie is said to be even better.

Botanical Gardens Wedding

Though planning a wedding usually keeps a couple up nights thinking through the color of napkins and the sharpness of forks, there are certain touches to the evening that can only be provided by God, like a combination of the perfect cool September evening and a high rattlesnake danger. These, as well as the best reception playlist we’ve ever heard, were two of the elements that not only made Tim and Heather’s wedding uniquely beautiful, but also kept Selah Auxiliary Shooter (Matt, my handsome husband) afraid while kneeling in bushes trying to get some rustic, weedy photos of the bride and groom (see below.)

The officiant was a well-spoken and sagacious judge with wisdom to share. The musician/best man, Carlos, was a Peruvian guitarist with fingers to woo a bee from a flower. The father of the bride pulled his nicest shoes out of the attic only to find they hadn’t held up as well as he hoped. Tim’s Hawaiian mother and aunts performed their traditional dance to the Lee staple, “Tiny Bubbles”. It was a storybook of a night. However, the most iconic event of the night was still the love displayed between all the family, and most of all Heather and Tim. We were happy to be a part of their wonderful night.

Thank you to Chatfield Botanical Gardens along with CC and her lovely crew from Colorado Wedding Company for setting up the environment that allowed for us to document this wedding so well.

Matt | Becca

Matt and Becca committed the rest of their lives to each other on New Year's Eve 2010. The Colorado wedding in seven degree weather didn't  put any sort of freeze on their winter wedding day. Matt & Becca are one of those couples who exudes so much joy and anticipation that you can't help but be equally as excited about their union. I have photographed many of the couple's attendees prior to Matt and Becca's wedding. I typically tell clients, "The more we know you the more we can do for you." I believe that statement reigns true after this wedding. We were able to capture some genuine, photojournalistic moments. If only I could post all of the photos for everyone to preview.

Ever wonder what would happen if it snowed on your engagement photos?

Everyone always wonders what it is that guys do in order to prepare for the wedding. Here, they in the most loving way are quoting Braveheart:  "They can take our lives but they can't take our freedom!"

groomsman

It was freezing outside. Being able to see your breath is an excellent way to affirm that. It maybe wasn't necessary for me to make the groomsman do this for over a minute, but the goal was to find some good expressions. I believe this image was taken right after I made a joke that went the wrong way.

wedding organistThese are the hands of my favorite organist in the world. Paul and I have been a part of approximately 6-8 weddings together, and it is always a treat.

Though it was freezing outside, Matt and Becca's sparkler exit was a unique and epic send off.

Found below is a time lapse video of the dancing at Matt & Becca's wedding. Matt of Amore DJ Entertainment is one of the best, most professional and caring DJs I have worked with. This video showcases a bit of the energy that his services facilitate.
