Unique Fashion Wedding Photography

I had the honor of photographing Jill and Ryan for their vintage post wedding session with Brian of Muntz Photography. These images were taken quite some time ago, but as I was sorting through digital files I found myself lost and inspired in this folder's images. The couple's brown suits were indeed the unique attire the bride and groom wore for their wedding. These images represent a new side of unique wedding photography. I love these photos so much. The unique wedding photographs were taken downtown Denver in the dark. The lighting and post production make these feel so dreamy. I just couldn't resist re-posting these.

Brad :: Christine This enchanting couple met on a blind double date almost a year ago from today. Obviously the date ended up working out well, but not as they had expected prior to their meeting. The two ended up clicking with each other more than the person they were with on the date. We met on a warm Tuesday in December at Denver's Washington Park to document their connection. When I asked Christine what her ideal engagement photos would look like, her only request was that the images looked like them. I think these candid engagement photos accomplished that and much more. I can't wait for the wedding! Be watching for more of Brad and Christine this summer.

urban energy filled engagement

Quentin | Angela Quentin had to work hard to win over Angela. During one of their first dates, Angela told Quentin that she would probably never get married. She envisioned herself as single forever and hoped to become a cat lady without any cats. Poor Quentin continued to call and drive across the state to visit his "friend." I think he could see right through her from the beginning. It didn't seem to take too long for Angie to realize that Quentin was great, and life with him would be far better than being the catless cat lady. Over the holiday, I was so thankful to document the engagement of a dear friend of mine. Angie and I played on a basketball team that traveled to Alaska. It didn't take long for our friendship to grow into many wonderful and ridiculous memories. These photos reflect my knowledge of Angela's willingness to do anything for a good laugh. They are so much fun and I am thankful Angela let Quentin find her.

Frosty Winter Engagement Shoot

These images are fresh off the engagement. Ashlie, Cody and I were able to catch each other five days after the proposal and 6 months after their introduction. The photo session took place at Ashlie's and my hometown, Ord, Nebraska. Ashlie and I have been close since our elementary days and every time we get together I recount the random ways we have encountered the world. I could make lists of momentous things we've walked through together. Needless to say, these images are very special and quite genuine. Here's to a story of energy, providence, connection, laughter and love.

If there is one thing I have learned as a photojournalist, it's that the best stories are documented when you are not sure if you should be taking photos...and you must keep taking photographs until someone tells you that you can't. engagement ring The story behind the ring? I believe Cody gave her this when he proposed. engagement propThis is how Cody proposed. He gave Ashlie a journal and told her he wanted to write back and forth, or something of that sort. After flipping through the first few pages she obviously figured out there was a little more to the book than that. The beautiful ring is one of a kind, and specially made from Cody's mother's wedding ring.

Kiss Wedding Book feature

Kiss Wedding Book Feature We just received Katie and Paul's 12x12 Kiss Wedding Album. My love for the albums grows every time the mail man brings by one of the Kiss company's lovely little books. The turnaround time, quirky touches, ease of transaction and final product put a joyful ending to a huge investment. From the attention to the vibrant color to the vintage wrapping, Kiss transforms a wedding album into a unique and simple heirloom. I am tempted to order a little book for myself each time I print one. xxxoxxo (but mostly xxxxx)

These tips help to understand how as photographers, you can set up the environment and interact with the guests to help get the best out of them.

wedding photojournalist

girls preparing to catch the bouquet at wedding Being a professional wedding photojournalist requires more than expensive equipment and technical understanding. It's about the captured expressions, connecting with every aspect of the environment and telling the truest story of the entire day. Our focus at Selah Photography is on these three concepts:

Expression: It is important to have your camera aimed and ready at all times to get the most genuine expressions. If you see the image in your viewfinder you are often too late. One must anticipate; the most expressive photographs occur in a fraction of a second. father and daughter dancing at weddingThis image was taken by Sarah at Jaci and Lane's wedding. The bride told us that she was really close with her father and wanted to make sure we got some genuine images of them together. Sarah was focused, and she documented their closeness well.

Connection: Accurate story telling is carried out best when we are listening and attune to the environment. Being a photographer that documents moments effectively requires an openness that listens and connects. That connection requires the journalist to invite themselves into the situation and remain aware of all happenings. flower girl dancingThis is one of my favorite images Whitney took this summer. The movement is strong and her decision to click the shutter was timed perfectly. She not only captured the vibrancy of the flower girl, but the energy in the environment.

Storytelling: Stories are interrelated and connected. In an emotive environment people display a reaction that develops from someone or something. As a photojournalist, we must observe beyond the main subject. The most unique stories are often told when one has connected with the root of the story rather than the obvious subject. father at wedding ceremony I love this image. Charista's (the bride) father is a pastor and his love for her was displayed vividly throughout the day. This image is of him seems to be a story of him supporting and giving up his daughter to his Father.

dog as ring bearThis is another great image captured by Sarah. The Collin's dressed their dog as the ring bear. As everyone was rushing out of the house to get to the ceremony, the dog wanted to make sure that he went along too.

Capturing images with a photojournalistic approach takes practice. At Selah, our goal is to not only train our eyes to see the honest story all around us, but to fix our minds to each moment, gathering the most genuine of expressions. That is what photojournalistic photography is all about.

Props to Whitney, Sarah, Ben and Rick for their outstanding photojournalist work during the 2010 wedding season. Below are some of the best photojournaistic wedding photos that they documented with Selah during the year.

country engagement documentation . chatfield

I met Stephanie and Phillip at Chatfield Botanical Gardens on Sunday to document their connection and engagement. The country theme fit these native Texans well. They are currently in their post graduate studies at the Denver Seminary. They crossed paths for a second time less than a year ago, yet their connection during this season of life was different. Stephanie and Phillip became best friends almost as quickly as they became engaged...some people just know.I loved being able to do this for you both. Many Blessings on the rest of your wedding preparation and engagement journey.

family storytelling

Natural family Photographs in Colorado Pikes Peak was quietly rich as I spent the day alongside this wonderful family. Our interactions are always filled with rooted thought and care. Through many questions and observation, I again learned much about listening and teaching from this family. It was a delight to document the beginning of Whitney's second year of life.

This is such a genuine documentation of their family's loving dynamics. Craig and Mary are delighted by Whitney's personality.

I had the honor of photographing precious Abbot in theWash Park fall leaves this past weekend. Abbot's soft and joyful personality filled these lifestyle, story telling images. These baby photos are so cute! We spent out time together playing and laughing with the baby. It's always really entertaining to watch the parents of the child. They may be more entertaining to take photos of than the baby. Regardless, it always makes for some great baby pictures.

REI engagement session. "What is the strangest thing you have ever photographed a couple doing?" asked Rachel. "Wearing fake mustaches," I quickly replied. Though the strangest, also the best in my eyes. You both are so much fun and I can't wait until the wedding. Let me tell you a little about Aaron and Rachel, but words might ruin the story. Their personalities shine brightly through these photos. Where were these photos taken, you might wonder. Along the Platte river right next to REI it is. it features the best of all worlds. Backgrounds of brick and the urban sky along with a Colorado-like river rapids. You can swim here too--just see.

Rachel was telling me how taking photos was initially an awkward thing. To make things "less awkward" I told her how being photographed is kind of like going to the gynecologist. Though the person feels strange about it, the professional does stuff like this all the time...sometimes I think it's better if I just don't say anything. Cheesman Park engagment session

Aaron wanted some of just himself. Actually, I don't think he did, but I trust that you will enjoy this image anyway.

Some of our friends at Cheesman Park were playing a little background music to set the mood.

This one is my favorite. It changes the pace of your breathing. It takes the right couple for me to let them go without any prompting. Most don't quite know how to handle it. During this portion of the shoot I kept my mouth shut, waiting to see what would happen. This is all them :)

I feel like something funny happened at this point but I can't really remember. Possibly my "assistant" was asking for help? Alright guys, give me your best smiles! Yes, they were in the river with no shoes at the beginning of November.

My new assistant was following us around asking if we needed any help. Upon continual reassurance that we were fine, he asked to take a picture with me. I had Rachel take one too. I love a man with a disposable camera. You guys are really going to be surprised when he shows up at your wedding with me. Go ahead and add Jackie "plus one"

Rachel is from Wisconsin. If only we had cash on hand there would have been a brat in this image. And now for the "best of" section. These are wonderful. You both are great! I can't wait for the wedding! Let us know what you think? Review us on Yelp

bo . hannah | unique engagement photos

Unique engagement Photographs Yesterday I made a short jaunt to Chicago to photograph Hannah and Bo. It's important to plan well when traveling for a photo shoot; however, this trip was possibly one of the most random, unplanned adventures of my life. I left Denver with the time and address of the photo shoot written on a piece of paper, yet somehow I didn't get as far as planning out the Chicago public transportation. It took me about 20 minutes to lose my map, which greatly increased the day's adventure. I ran around the city with no clue what I would run in to. Fortunately, the day ended up divinely placing me where I needed to be, as if I had everything planned all along. Hannah, Bo and I met at Cantigny in Wheaton right as the sun was giving its last hours of light. Their love and expression needed little direction. These images are such a clear depiction of the couple's connection. Within the first three weeks of dating they knew they wanted to marry each other. Seven months later, here we are. engagment shoot, romantic photo

I don't think they knew I was photographing them here. I told them I was taking photos of Hannah's ring. These two images are about as natural as it gets. I love the color in this image. Bo mentioned several times that he would love to take a photo by the tanks. To Hannah's and my disdain, we did end up by the tanks taking photos. I willingly jumped on Bo's excitement and made him do something strange. After this I said, "Let's go find a bunch of roses or something more girly."

This image was taken while Hannah and Bo were walking. I probably could have done the whole photo shoot without saying a word and had many wonderful photos like this. Their expression and intimacy didn't need any prompting.

I think Bo was pointing out a hole in her sweater or something. Even their simplest exchanges are rich. The first time Bo and Hannah came to Cantigny they didn't quite grasp the area's fullness. Their picnic took place right next to the parking lot. The area was so beautiful. We could have spent the whole day finding lovely little areas to photograph.

...the energy in this one. Yes, please.

Whenever I look at this image I get this song click here by Foreigner stuck in my head. So please be entertained, click on the link, join me in my head and help me bring back the 80s one blog post at a time. Bo and Hannah will be getting married in Denver early next summer. I am so thankful that I get to be a part of your day.

Greenwood Village Engagement Photographs Matt said that the guys at work gave him a hard time all week about coming to Colorado for engagement pictures after he got married. This was something Jenni & I enjoyed bringing up all morning. :) I was very excited to photograph them in Greenwood Village on a walking trail I use often. All of the trees were at their peak, yet the photos don't come close to justifying the vibrant colors and detail that turn before the season's change. I think the fall is so visually and symbolically full of beauty. Matt and Jenni--congrats on your engagement! Jenni should probably get another ring, right?

emotional weddings

Emotional Weddings like this

Emotional weddings like this are my favorite. As a photographer, they invite me in to the story immediately. This couple opened up and allowed the kind honest documentation to flow.

Chelsa and Nick exchanged vows in Kearney, Nebraska, on a brisk, sunny September afternoon. Chelsa and I grew up together going to drama camps and participating in any activity where we could perform or express ourselves. She sings, and she was always traveling to some contest when she was young. I believe I proclaimed myself your manager at some point. That didn't last long, but I've always been a whole-hearted fan since the beginning. These images are so special for many reasons. I love how there is a distinct feeling and story in each of them. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have been able to participate in this experience with you both. There are a million things I would like to put words to that I thought and learned during this day.

Introducing the Bennett's:

This is where you should go to youtube and type in "Can you Feel it" by Jackson Five and then finish looking at the rest of the images. In case you actually do it, find the 2001 final concert version.

And the award for excessive photobooth users goes to Channing, Jessica and Andrea. At one point they asked if they were taking too many photos and generally I say not at all...but this time smiled and said "Ahhh..." But girls, the more the merrier right? This beauty is an award winner. Chelsa and Nick were able to display a wide range of their personalities in their photos. They were one of the best, nonprompted photo booth couples I've seen.

modern family photography

Modern, Journalistic Family Photography I was privileged to photograph the Swartzendruber (say that ten times) family a couple days ago in Hastings, Nebraska. I was close to taking the little one, Zaine, home with me. As you can see, he is the star of many of these images. Tara is a photographer out of Henderson, Nebraska. This is the first time she has been on the other side of the camera since her wedding. I was so honored to be their photographer. When Tara was telling me what she was looking for she spoke to my heart when she said, "I don't want anything traditional." That I can do. These are so much fun.

vintage DIY wedding

Vintage DIY Wedding I had my GPS on my dash, Google maps on my phone and my dad on the line (who has been everywhere ten times) trying to find the shortest way to a little museum. It was a privilege to celebrate Kody and Veronica's vintage "destination wedding" held in Alliance, Nebrasaka. I have posted somewhere within the text on my website, "The more we know you, the better we can do for you." For this wedding that statement is as true as ever. There is a unique sense of knowing that comes when you have grown up with one another. This wedding reminded me of how much I love people from Central Nebraska. I hope you experience nothing but the deepest blessings. Much love! The Wadas wedding...featuring Matt the usher/part Native American.

This is Veronica's party dress that she changed into the before the reception. The lace on the dress was from her grandmother's wedding dress, which was also the dress her matron of honor wore for her wedding. I'm thinking about giving a discount to people if they promise to let me do funny things with them. Kody has always been a ladies man. Veronica left him for a minute and elementary school girls began flocking. Dear Matt (on the far right) will you please be in all my weddings? What the heck is this, right? Carhenge. It is as ridiculous and wonderful in real life. The wedding colors were Peacock. walking bride down the isle We went into the museum after hours to get this award winning image.
